Poverty in Britain Essays - 1502 Words

Poverty in Britain When the Liberal government came to power in 1906 they had no stated intention of government intervention of social policy. Between the years 1906 and 1914, the Liberals took steps to improve the health, living and working conditions of the groups of individuals their policies were designed for. The victory for the Liberals was a surprising landslide which left the Liberals with 401 seats and Labour with 53 seats. Even though Labour owed their seats partly to the Liberals as they made a pact to prevent anti-Conservative votes being wasted they showed no gratitude as liberalism was about tariff reform, taxation and foreign policy but labour had always concentrated on equal†¦show more content†¦The Liberals still had an `old Liberal wing antagonist to social reform; and they were also conscious of the hostility to social reform of the Conservative dominated House of Lords. The Boer war of 1899-1902highlighted the physical deterioration in the British people. The war fought to preserve the Empire. It revealed the fact that the British people were weak and unhealthy. Fears were expressed that generations of urban living, in often appalling conditions, were leading to degeneration of the national physique. Commentators pointed to the fact that Britain was the most urbanised society in the world with nine out of ten of its population living in towns and cities. The call for medical inspection and meals was sounded by the interdepartmental committee on Physical Deteriorationin 1904 but the first real enactment of the Liberal governments social policy was the 1906 provision of meals act. This act meant free school meals for children but the significance of it was it had no stigma attached, it treated all school children equally. It came under opposition from the Charity Organisation Society as they felt the supply of free school meals was inadequate and t he want was found to be due to many different causes, and could only be removed by thorough treatment at the home. Maternal Health Child Mini Free Essays

1) Do you believe there is a need for public health influence in the area of family planning? What would be the role? I believe public health has many benefits for every individual especially women. One of the benefits is that family planning services allows individuals to aimly achieved their own family size, and contributes to improved health outcomes for infants, children, women as well as families (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1999, pg. 1075). We will write a custom essay sample on Maternal Health Child Mini or any similar topic only for you Order Now Some these benefits services include educating about preventing sexually transmitted infection such as HIV, herpes, syphilis etc. Besides from education, they also counsel patients especially women who are taking contraceptives and/or IUD devices. Counseling is critical part in health care because it helped women and men to be aware of the risks that they are taking when it comes to having another child and know all the unexpected and expected outcomes when it comes to prenatal and postnatal care. Effective methods such as Breast, pelvic examinations, breast and cervical screenings are found the first step for women who are at risk for breast or cervical cancer. Without these services, there is a high chance of more unintended pregnancies in America as well as premature babies and mortality. Recent article, Guttmacher Institute (2012) stated â€Å"Each year, publicly funded family planning services prevent 1. 94 million unintended pregnancies, including 400,000 teen pregnancies (Guttmacher institute, 2012, pg. 3). With that being said, family planning services have been effective for women who decided not to get pregnant. It also helped Medicaid, a federal USA health program for low income adults and children, by Medicaid saving a lot of expenditures from pregnancy-related care ( Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1999, pg. 1074). With the help of Family planning program, this helped save a lot of families from psychological problems to financial problems. Unfortunately, Guttmacher (2012) listed most women who are in a poverty line, have low education level or are single parents are less likely to have access of family planning services (pg. 5). Some of the obstacles for these women who are not on the family planning services are because of lack of awareness about family planning services, limited access to publicly funded services and access to insurance coverage. These obstacles challenges because many americans are still left out of insurance. With the help of Obama administration which is trying to get every single american to have affordable insurance. This will help bridge the gap even more close for more additional women to take the step into getting family planning services. Elements of preconception care should be integrated into every primary care visit for women of reproductive age. 23 Preconception care must not be limited to a single visit to a health care provider, but rather be a process of care designed to meet the needs of an individual. 25 As part of comprehensive preconception care, providers should encourage patients to develop a reproductive life plan. A reproductive life plan is a set of goals and action steps based on personal values and resources about whether and when to become pregnant and have (or not have) children. 3 Providers also must educate patients about how their reproductive life plan impacts contraceptive and medical decision-making. Increased awareness of the importance of preconception care can be achieved through public outreach and improved collaboration between health care providers. Currently, only 30. 3 percent of women report receiving pre-pregnancy health counseling. 13 Future efforts should promote research to furth er define the evidence-based standards of preconception care, determine its cost-effectiveness, and improve tracking of the proportion of women obtaining these services. Nick Smith Essay Example For Students

Nick Smith Essay Fresh. Comp 2 2-25-04Stupid PeopleMost people say being stupid will lead nowhere. They claim that it isthe worst possible condition in which to spend ones life, and if possible,it should be completely avoided. They would even suggest if the symptomsof stupidity are caught in the early stages it could easily be treated by asurgeon. Perhaps if people took a closer look at some of the advantagesstupidity has to offer, they wouldnt have such a negative attitude towardit. Admittedly, stupidity has certain disadvantages. Life isnt a bowlof cherries and being stupid doesnt make it any fruitier. Being stupidcan annoy even the most sensitive people. If someone acts stupid, and doesit in the wrong crowd, like a group of adults, it will seem more immaturethan funny. If someone is forced to act stupid while dealing with lowerlife forms, for example, high school teachers, they may encounter barrierssuch as cruelty and insensitivity, with the utterance of statements like,Think with your head straight! or, You have a brain, use it. Eventhough these are all true, there are still many advantages to stupidity. The first advantage is very easy to understand. Stupid people arenever asked to do a lot. Many have noticed that people tend to steer awayfrom someone they feel may be stupid. This is for a very good reason. Thestupidity, which they posses labels them as a stupid person; once they havebeen given this label it is very hard to shake it off. Possibly, it is aword that describes the working habits of the person, such as crappy. Yet, this creates a positive situation for the stupid person. They willhave a lot of free time on their hands for more of lives truly meaningfulpleasures. There has been a rumor going around that suggests that stupidpeople have low expectations. This is true, but they are so stupid thatthey dont realize great from O.K. They could have a cordless phone, butwould probably choose instead an alarm, clock, radio, and telephone becausethey will think that it is cool to be able to listen to the radio and talkon the telephone at the same time. And someone with the advantage ofstupidity might have a hard time doing certain tasks, or setting things up. Yet this isnt all bad. For example, if a stupid person leaves the chore, and comes back to it later, no one will be able to understand it. Wouldthey get fired from their job? No. For the very simple reason that no onewould expect to understand his or her stupidity. The ideas stupid peoplecreate tend to be original. For example, when was the last time someonestupid said something, and made you think about it? It seems that peopleare always talking about someone elses dumb idea. An example of such anidea would be: How many stories will that Physics teacher fall out of atwenty story building before having a stroke? This would suggest thatstupid people might have the upper hand when it comes to thinking uporiginal ideas. In fact, the next time someone wants an original idea forsomething, they should try talking to their local, community stupid person. The reason for this is that while a stupid person thinks with his head, hedoes not do so an organized manner. This is why they have so muchcreativity. By thinking in this fashion, their ideas have a naturaltendency to flow more easily, without the interruptions that occur from theediting of thoughts that logical people would have normally. Thus ifsomeone else should say to you, That was a stupid idea! you should merelylook that person straight in the eye, and say, Thank-you! This alsomeans that the claim, Stupid minds think alike. is not true. All stupidminds have different ideas, each idea being original. .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d , .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .postImageUrl , .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d , .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d:hover , .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d:visited , .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d:active { border:0!important; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d:active , .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucd7cfa2c14e984e551c560087ec7705d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: In the Short Stories by Ernest Hemingway a young b EssayOne of the final advantages of stupidity is that stupid people arealways remembered, even after graduation day. It has been noticed how aquiet person is always hard to detect, and often remains anonymous. Thereis a very good reason for this. The mind has a hard time keeping quietpeople in its memory track. But it is much easier and pleasing for themind to remember someone really stupid. When was the last time you laughedat an idiot in your class? When was the last time you laughed at thelittle kid at the back of the room? The evidence here proves how stupidpeople last longer in someones thoughts. Stupidity clearly has many advantages, as long as someone is smartenough to use them! It is important to understand that stupid people arelike all other humans physically. Yet, because of the difference betweensmart and stupid people, smart human beings should give them some breathingspace. Contrary to common belief, stupidity is not a disease. Even thoughit has some disadvantages, the advantages clearly show that stupidity canoften be a privilege rather that a hindrance in the stupid persons life.

Literary Analysis of DESIREES BABY free essay sample

INTRODUCTION In the short story, Desiree’s Baby, written by Kate Chopin there is a sense of karma and consequences that is used in the story. The story explores the problem of a man’s pride overcoming the love he has for his wife and race. The purpose of this essay is to examine why Armand’s pride was bigger and more than the love for his wife, Desiree and how race changed everything. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND/ LITERARY THEORY The historical background of this short story is slavery. However, this story was written in 1892, which was twenty-seven years after slavery was abolished, but took place during the era of slavery. In the story, Armand is a slave owner in Louisiana. Also, the historical background puts race and heritage into the story as the key points to be seen and understood. The theory that I am applying in my story is that of Cultural Studies. We will write a custom essay sample on Literary Analysis of DESIREES BABY or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The cultural studies theory concentrates on how and the way a particular subject relates to a social class, ideology, gender, ethnicity, and nationality. Armand’s Pride Throughout this story, Armand is portrayed as the man who had it all. He figured that because of his family name which he thought was, â€Å"†¦one of the oldest and proudest in Louisiana† (Chopin 1). The fact that Armand was a slave owner and came from a family whose name was well known he used his family name as another way to feel like a king besides owning slaves. Armand’s pride came first before his family because he felt like he had to protect the family name and history at any cost. For this he did not want anything to destroy who and what he was which was a well known slave owner, so he told his wife and baby to leave since he assumed that she was black. Armand did not want people to frown upon him or make him into a joke so, he felt like â€Å"†¦he no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name† (Chopin 2). The â€Å"unconscious injury† Armand refers to is the lost memory he feels his wif e has lost of her ethnicity. Finally, Armand felt that his pride was hurt because of the shame his wife has brought to the family name of Aubigny. In the article titled Desiree’s Baby by Mega Essays, Desiree and Armand’s relationship is described as a â€Å"superficial love influenced by pride and prejudiced, and ultimately causing destruction and death† (Mega Essays). Therefore his love for Desiree was not true but only superficial and his love for his baby â€Å"†¦was motivated not by genuine love, but rather by pride, because the baby is a boy who will continue his important family name† (Mega Essays). This article shows how Armand only cared about how great his family will be seen because of the fact that he has a baby boy which can hold the family name. Desiree’s Love In this short story love was a problem that Armand and Desiree Aubigny had. Armand met Desiree when she was eighteen when he rode past her as â€Å"she stood one day against the stone pillar† (Chopin 1). He â€Å"fell in love, as if struck by a pistol shot† (Chopin 1) which was the way that all Aubignys fell in love. It was so suddenly and he hardly knew she but he married her right off and she had his son. I believe Desiree loved Armand and her son more than Armand ever tried to because she knew that he was a good man and he changed after he met her. However, the only true love she had was the love for her adoptive parents. The only true love throughout the story was Armand’s and Desiree’s parents. In the article Desiree’s Baby Group, the critic bmadnick, writes about how love is a main point of Desiree’s Baby and the impact that it had on Desiree the most. He says that â€Å"the kinds of love shown in the story tell us that love means different things to different people. To Armand, his love for Desiree is superficial instead of a deep-seated feeling. This is shown when Armand’s love for Desiree changes so quickly.† This article is about the claims of Desiree’s Baby and what the main points are. Also, it shows the impact that society can have on us. Who’s Race? Race is the second major issue in the short story besides pride. Since Armand figured that he knew his past and who he actually was and he assumed that Desiree was the reason why their baby is mixed. Also, because of the fact that Desiree was adopted and did not know what her ethnicity was Armand felt like her race, which he assumed was black, changes everything. Race is a color not an origin and Desiree looked white and white features which were pale hands and grey eyes. Even though she had an â€Å"obscure origin† (Chopin 1), Desiree was thought that she was not the reason for the problem they had which was their baby being mixed. In the article The Power of Writing, by Becamm she talks about race and how this story is at first seemed as a Cinderella story with a big secret. Becamm describes how the author, Kate Chopin â€Å"demonstrates how racism played a major part in people’s lives in the 1800s†. Racism did play a major role because when it was found out that the baby was mixed everything changed such as Armand’s mood and Desiree’s happiness. Desiree was happy when she had the baby and Armand was as happy and nice to the slaves then before but after he saw his child growing to be mixed it changed his whole attitude. MAJOR OPPOSING The opposing side of my argument is that Desiree’s Baby has nothing to do with love but only pride and prejudice. Jmeenach, a critic in the article of the claims of Desiree’s Baby, has his own opinion that slightly differentiates from mines. He says that the story uses racism, a man’s selfishness, and how blood is thicker than water. CONCLUSION In the story, Desiree’s Baby, written by Kate Chopin in 1892, there are plenty of topics that are brought along such as gender issues, womanism, and race. However, the problem of this short story is Armand’s pride overcoming the love he has for his wife Desiree. His problem was that he had too much pride especially for his family name. He felt like everything evolved around his name and him. Desiree did have love for Armand and thought he felt the same but apparently Armand only cared about showing off his family and power. This problem can be solved by realizing that a family name is not what always makes us who we are. It is up to us to become better than just a name that is the proudest.

Administrative Salary Hiring Trends for 2017

Administrative Salary Hiring Trends for 2017 If you work in the office or administrative support sector, you’re in luck. These occupations are poised to see about a million and a half new job openings by 2022. Companies are filling vacancies and making new ones at a rapid pace, seeking employees who have experience in the industry, a proven track record for collaboration and initiative, excellent communication skills, technological savvy, a positive attitude, and are keen to advance.1Here are some trends to watch out for this year.1. Job Title ChangesAdmin professionals are being tasked with different- and more- job responsibilities. This is starting to reflect in titles like Chief Executive Administrator, Director of First Impressions, Administrative Chief of Staff, Director of Administration, and Administrative Services Manager.2. Job Description ObsolescenceYour job description doesn’t match your day-to-day work at all. You’re doing so much more and such bigger tasks that you hardly recognize the job you were hired to do. It’s time to revamp your job description. Ask your manager if you can sit down and create an updated version. This helps hold both of you accountable, and will help to show your performance more accurately when review (and raise) time comes along.3. Salary BumpsGood news! Salaries are improving by an average of 3% or more- especially for certain senior and HR positions. If you speak another language, or you have a Certified Administrative Professional designation, or you’re a specialist in the MS Office Suite, you’re likely to be in line for more money.4. Diversifying RolesIn this new global world, different skills and experience will be more in demand. Bilingualism, customer service skills, financial savvy, etc. Start thinking about what you offer outside the box in the new economy.5. TechnologyGone are the days of getting jobs just because of lightning fast typing speed. New technology happens fast- and administrative professionals have to k eep up. Educate yourself and specialize in multi-skilled roles involving online marketing, web development, customer service, and other online aspects of your job, and you’ll go far. You’ll want to focus less on the old standards of spreadsheets and data entry and more on new things like web conferencing, IT hardware, and other software systems.6. EducationThere will be a trend toward employers requiring an associates degree- at minimum- for their administrative hires. Get yourself on the cutting edge and get your associate’s- or even your bachelor’s- to stay ahead of the curve.

What is Abortion and is it Morally Permissible Essay

What is Abortion and is it Morally Permissible - Essay Example In order to determine the ‘rightness’ or the ‘wrongness’ of the issue of abortion, virtue ethics can frame the issue, but the questions becomes how to define what is virtue and by whose standards it is defined. In deciding how to discuss abortion, defining the morality of the procedure is dependent upon the personal morals of the individual as they are influenced by their beliefs systems concerning the value of the life within the womb. The effect in the UK as abortion was made legal was profound. After the Abortion Act of 1968 came into existence the first observable consequence was a dramatic drop in emergent medical care as a result of poorly executed and illegal abortions. The number of abortions performed in the first year in England, Wales, and Scotland numbered at 23,641, which rose to 54,819 in 1969 and 160,000 in 1972.1 Through an examination of the statistics, the numbers reveal that a great number of people have determined that the procedure has v alue to them and that the morality of having the procedure either is irrelevant or they are in support of abortion as a moral choice. In addition, the number of women dying each year from poorly executed illegal abortions between 1926 and 1935 was between 400 and 500 per year.2 From this perspective, legal abortion saves the lives of women who might otherwise seek an illegal procedure. The morality of abortion can be related to defining the meaning of the concept. From a social standpoint, however, the definition of abortion becomes much more complicated. Abortion is a cause, it is a crime, it is a political stance, and it is a perspective, all depending on the belief systems within which it is being considered. One perspective on the impact of abortion on gender relations is that it was a contributing factor to increased freedoms for women so that they could participate in the public sector, having jobs and conducting business on an equal basis to men. From another perspective, abo rtion has contributed to an increase in promiscuity which is based on the premise that pregnancy no longer must be a sign of immoral behaviour as the consequences to that behaviour can be eliminated.3 Thomson relates an example of how abortion can be viewed as a right for women. The parable that is used is based on the idea that a grown musician is in medical peril and the music association decides to attach the musician, through a tube, to another person in order to continue his life. Although the person has not given permission for the tube to be attached to save this person’s life, the removal of this tube will kill the musician. The moral question that Thomson poses is whether or not the person who is facilitating the life of the musician is morally obligated to continue to do so because cutting off the ties between them would kill the musician.4 Thomson is suggesting that the individual who is tied to the musician has a right to leave the situation as they were not given the option or choice in facilitating the continuation of the musician’s life. The morality involved is about choice. The right thing to do is dependent upon the choices that an individual makes about how they perceive their obligations within this world. A person who believes that the initial crime of being hooked up to another individual without permission is the moral parable that defines the situation will believe that abortion is a natural extension of individual rights and is morally acceptable. The decision to abort a foetus that will become a child that cannot be cared for appropriately or whose existence will irreparably damage the life of a woman may exert a sense of morality over

Some Like it Hot the movie Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Some Like it Hot the movie - Essay Example This is how the gangster figure maintains his mystique and aura of fear. When Spats Colombo does appear in front of the camera he is extremely well groomed, and has a cold, aloof expression. His name, and his evident desire to keep his white shoes clean, are ironic touches, because they show an obsession with external appearances, while the audience knows that underneath this suave and highly groomed exterior there is a much darker criminal personality. Sugar Kane likewise has a significant name, which in this case emphasizes her sweetness, but when Joe and Jerry meet her, she explains that her real name is Kowalczyk. This shows that she is not all that she appears to be. Her sweetness is real but she exudes a siren power. Even her weakness for alcohol is given a sexual connotation when she takes her flask from her garter, giving the boys, who are dressed as girls, full view of her legs. The film plays with the intimacy of girls sharing private space together, and there is humor in the way that scenes which would be innocent and pure between girls alone together, become piquant and tense when the boys are in drag. In their own specific ways, Spats Columbo and Sugar Kane represent extremes of masculinity and femininity in Prohibition America. The trick of drag acting calls these stereotypes into question and makes the radical point that men and women can find love in the ambiguous space between genders. The film shows that this is a better, and much funnier, way than the traditional confines of gender

Accreditation Audit Essay Example for Free

Accreditation Audit Essay With all of the possible problems that could occur during surgery, a wrong-site, wrong-patient mistake is one that should never arise. Nightingale Community Hospital (NCH) fully understands the importance of doing away with these errors and has set up protocol to work towards this goal. While the protocol is in place, it is not fully compliant with Joint Commission (JC) standards. Standard: UP.01.01.01: Conduct a preprocedure verification process. Nightingale Community Hospital has a Site Identification and Verification policy and procedure. Within this policy, and Preoperative/Preprocedure Verification Process is addressed. There is also a Preprocedure Hand-Off form present. This form is a bit misleading as it is essentially a hand-off form in general with a few extra boxes possible for check-off. To prepare for inspection and audit, NCH should create and implement a form for use within the Operating Theater or wherever procedures are performed, such as bedside procedures. This form needs to be more specific in addressing at least the minimum requirements by JC. The form needs to cite that all relevant documentation is present, such as signed consent form, nursing assessment, preanesthesia assessment, history and physical. The form also needs to specify that the necessary diagnostic and radiology test results, rather they be images and scans, or biopsy reports, and properly displayed and labeled. Finally, to fulfill the minimum requirements by JC, any and all required blood products, implants, devices, and special equipment needs to be labeled and matched to the patient. Standard: UP.01.02.01: Mark the procedure site. NCH covers the procedure site marking standard fairly well within their Site Identification and Verification Policy. It mentions that site marking is needed for those cases involving laterality, multiple structures, or levels. Several times in their policy NCH mentions that it is best to have the patient involved, if at all possible. If the patient is unable to mark the site, the policy states that the physician will be called to mark the site. The policy states that the mark shall be made in permanent black marker so it will remain visible after skin preparation, and also in a location that will remain visible after sterile draping is in place. The policy also  includes circumstances in which the marking will be unable to be performed based on the location of the surgery being in an area that is unable to be marked. Standard: UP.01.03.01: A time-out is performed before the procedure. Nightingale Community Hospital has an adequate procedure in place for the time-out performance. Within the Site Identification and Verification Policy, the Time-Out Procedure complies with JC standards. A time-out is to be conducted immediately prior to performance of the procedure, it is initiated by the nurse or technologist, it involves all personnel involved in the procedure, the team members agree to a minimum of patient identity, correct site, and correct procedure to be performed, and all of this information is documented in the record, including those involved and the duration of the time-out. The only issue not addressed fully is the possibility of multiple procedures occurring on the same patient by different practitioners, and in that case, an additional time-out needs to be done for every new procedure. The Communication priority focus area is an extremely important area for any hospital. This is a common sense area that should be able to reach complete compliance. A wrong-patient, wrong-site issue should never arise and is completely avoidable. In 2010, Joint Commission reported that wrong-patient/site surgeries continued to be the most frequently reported sentinel event(Spath 2011).Jay Arthur states that JC reports between four and six wrong-site surgeries per day(2011). The World Health Organization believes that at least 500,000 deaths per year could be prevented if the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist was correctly implemented. These numbers, when compared with the possibility of 100% compliance, are astounding and completely avoidable. Nightingale Community Hospital is well on their way to avoiding these types of sentinel events through usages of proper protocol, procedures, and policy as is seen by the upward trend from their last year of self-checks. With continued diligence and appropriate modifications made, this can be an area that NCH, and any other hospital can be fully compliant in. References Arthur, J. (2011). Alienation and Isolation in William Falukners A Rose For Emily :: essays research papers

Alienation and Isolation in William Faulkner’s â€Å"A Rose for Emily†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  William Faulkner’s short story â€Å"A Rose for Emily† displays themes of alienation and isolation. Emily Grierson’s own father is found to be the root of many of her problems. Faulkner writes Emily’s character as one who is isolated from the people of her town. Her isolation from society and alienation from love is what ultimately drives her to madness.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Emily’s isolation is evident because after the men that cared about her deserted her, either by death or simply leaving her, she hid from society and didn’t allow anyone to get close to her. Miss Emily is afraid to confront reality. She seems to live in a sort of fantasy world where death has no meaning. Emily refuses to accept or recognize the death of her father, and the fact that the world around her is changing.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Emily attempts to recapture her past by escaping from the present. She wants to leave the present and go back to a happier past. Miss Emily wants to find the love she once knew. â€Å"After her father’s death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all† (243). Emily alienates herself from everyone when the two people she has loved most in her life go away. She becomes afraid to grow close to anyone in fear of losing them again.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Miss Emily’s isolation is able to benefit her as well. She has the entire town believing she is a frail and weak woman, but she is very strong indeed. Everyone is convinced that she could not even hurt a fly, but instead she is capable a horrible crime, murder. Miss Emily’s actions range from eccentric to absurd. After the death of her father, and the estrangement from the Yankee, Homer Barron, she becomes reclusive and introverted. The reader can find that Miss Emily did what was necessary to keep her secret from the town. â€Å"Already we knew that there was one room in that region above stairs which no one had seen in forty years† (247).

Structure of the industry/market 5. Government role 6. Business environment 7. Firm/Industry Location 8. Business and pricing strategies 9. Entrepreneurial ability of managers C. Conclusion D. References Introduction Starbucks, what started in Seattle in 1971s by three friends: erry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker. They opened a small shop and began selling fresh and cold coffee.Starbucks has always been a place where you can find world’s best coffee. In 1970s, Starbucks open its first coffee restaurant and its name comes from a classical American novel (Starbucks, 2013). Through 1980s, Howard Schultz came into Starbucks, after a business trip to Italy and impressed by coffee culture, his perception is that how to make it come true in U. S, he experimented from Seattle. In 1990s, Starbucks has expanded their production line beyond Seattle. Stepping cross the rest sates of U. S as well as international market. At the same time, Starbucks released its special option that offer stock option to employees, which made Starbucks become a public traded company. From 2000s, Starbucks continued its awesome phenomenon, its operation widespread over 15,000 locations over 40 countries. Classical Starbuck’s coffee beverage has been well recognized by lots of customers. Nowadays, Starbucks is not merely a successful coffee retailer; it is a coffee culture and place that people enjoy their lifetime. The nine main areas will give out an explanation how Starbucks looks like.Key word: Nature of product; Market Trends; Production/Supply Process & Cost; Structure of the Industry; Government Role; Business Environment; Firm/Industry Location; Business & Pricing Strategies and Entrepreneurial Ability of Manager. Analysis of the Economics of Starbucks Nature of Product Existing products: obviously, as a coffee related retailer, Starbucks mainly focus on coffee diversify selling. The main kinds of Starbucks coffee are latte, espresso, frappuccino as well as some sweet bakery, ice cream and so on.By the way, according to the idea of Starbucks itself, what they likely do that create a friendly drinks atmosphere rather than only sell a cup of coffee. Actually, customers really enjoyed their coffee time in Starbucks store thanks to cultural environment. What is more, Starbucks also provide coffee beans, coffee pot and coffee cup and other products. In the Chinese market localization of product design, and some tea kind, drink even has a particular season sales of Starbucks moon cakes, etc.Role of technology: Starbucks always try their best to improve well-roasted coffee beans, ground to perfection and then brewed to personal taste. The CEO released a statement that the company spends 20 years perfecting a top top-secret technology that ultimately results in a cup of coffee made wi th via, that is indistinguishable from Starbuck's typical brewed coffee (CNN money, 2009). In 2008, Starbucks purchased new coffee equipment that is called â€Å"clover†. The Clover uses precise technology and a calculated algorithm to brew coffee within one degree Fahrenheit of its ideal temperature and produce the ideal flavor (Chron, 2013).It also gives a control to interaction between water and grounds. What is more advancement, it could connect by Starbucks network in order to more effect management each unit. Product life cycle: generally, product life cycle is divided into four parts, introduce, growth, mature and decline. Every production has to walk through these four parts. According to Starbucks, with different coffee launched based on seasons, it is still located into growth period but close to mature step.Starbucks play its role in coffee industry similar like what monopolist do, its production occupied almost whole market share that should directed to mature sta ge, but new production occasional launched hold Starbucks to increase its sales volume. Price elasticity: The price elasticity of Starbucks is not very high. On one hand, coffee is necessary in daily life. On the other hand, Starbucks’ goodwill has been recognized among coffee fans, it is not matters of price. Substitutes and complementary products: coffee’s substitutes will be water, tea, mike or other fruit juice. When you step into Starbucks store, customer service is unchanged if you pick up juices even a bottle of water. Market Trends Consumer behavior: Starbucks hold approximately 33 percentage of market share in U. S. however, half of this huge number accounted by guys who aged at 25- 40(Chorn, 2013). Obviously, primary target audience of Starbucks is this grouped people. The characteristic of them is relatively high income, professional careers and a focus on social welfare. Motivation of consuming of these guys to Starbucks certainly for entertainment, enjoy li fe and pursuit of fashion and communication. The sub target customers is young adults who aged at 18-24, Starbucks position itself as a place college student can hang out, studying, writing paper and meeting. The rest customers of Starbucks are kids and teens who get there by their parents. Indifference curves: Indifference curve means products, which have different combine differently to satisfy customers. A simple indifference curve is shown in figure 1 For the coffee, at the same time, environment and music can satisfy customers. Coffee can satisfy customers’ taste sense, while environment can satisfy customers’ spirits.Starbucks can develop their own cup, coffee beans to improve efficiency. Shifts in demand and supply curves: With six factors influence demand curve: consumers' income, taste and preferences, consumer expectations, related product price, the government behavior and regulations and the number of consumers. Again, six factors influence supply, number of suppliers, prices of resources, technology, supply expected, price of all products and government actions. Particularly, Starbucks hold 33 percentage of U. S coffee market share, demand of Starbucks will increased, so demand will shift toward right side. Also, thousands of hundreds location established would satisfy these demand, supply curve move right side. Production/supply Process& cost Input: what Starbucks need do if it needs transforms quality coffee is inputting coffee bean, water, some capital investment as well as labor. Production function & Cost function: production function relates to the maximum quantity of output that can be produced from given amounts of input. A graph showed below about Starbucks production function. Figure 2: Retrieved from: http://faculty. washington. edu/ezivot/econ301/labor_demand. tm Apparently, as more and more labors putted into operating room, sales of Starbucks coffee increased. However, when increasing labor beyond quantity maximum, there is no increase on quantity. Marginal analysis: marginal analysis is one of the most important managerial tools. It states that optimal managerial decision involve comparing the marginal benefits of a decision with the marginal cost. Variable costs will not affect the output of the change in Starbucks. Coffee industry did not have a fixed mode. Coffee is the taste of the food service industry depends on customer. Structure of the Industry/MarketNature of industry: Starbucks as global famous coffee retailer had build one of world’s most powerful and recognizable brands of high-quality coffee and the unique â€Å"Starbucks Experience. † It first revolutionized coffee making industry by creating â€Å"third place† between workplace and home that is a clean, friendly environment where customers would escape chaos from daily life (Wikinvest, 2013). So, whole coffee industry has been winded by Starbucks style that creating relax and comfortable place for staying by qua lity coffee servicing. The rest of other competitors is trying advance environment as well.Industry concentration: it also another important part affect marginal decision. As we mentioned above, almost one third coffee production consumed by customers derived from Starbucks, coffee industry mostly distributed by this large company, certainly, other small company or local coffee store also account for whole coffee industry. Competition: obviously, Starbucks hold a dominate position in coffee industry and has no clearly rivalry in this section. The National Coffee Association estimates that the US coffee market will reach $29 billion in 2011(Wikinest, 2013).However, the three monsters in coffee industry target their different market. Starbucks try their best to hold on unbelievable market share with some change of price strategy. Whereas, even McDonald's larger retail footprint may overlap more with Starbucks' core markets, but their stark differences as stores are reflective of the g eneral differences between their core customers. The Dunkin donuts ranked in the third, its customers experience is more similar to â€Å"coffee-to-go† rather than place to enjoy lifetime. Consequently, market of coffee to go will be a fierce competition.Oligopoly Models: an oligopoly is a market that dominated by few competitors, Starbucks controlled not less than 30% coffee market share and made a important role entire market. Whereas, McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts, and Caribou Coffee affect coffee industry could not be ignored. Government Role Government role should be considered inseparable component as running business wherever domestic or global. What is good news for successful applying government role that it signed a contract with a province in China based on Chinese government role. That is positive on input procurement of Starbucks in Chinese market. There is a signed deal that Starbucks cooperate with province of Yunnan to set up its first-ever coffee-bean farm in the world to cater to a rapidly growing population of coffee drinkers in China amid a global battle for quality coffee beans (The wall Street Journal, 2010). In contrast, the illegal operation in U. K will produce a punishment for itself. In 2011, the company paid exactly zero in corporate tax rate even 398 million in sales (Forbes, 2012).The British government has already taken a action and adjust some law restriction specially. Business Environment Business environment consisted by two components, general environment and industry environment. Through a deep analysis could help the company compete well in the market and make more profit from that. The general environmental analysis in which a firm exists in following five parts, economic, political, socio-cultural, technological and demographic (Brain Mass, 2013). The recent global economic recession affect business with both rising operation cost and lower profit margin.Almost every industry even companies have been involved in to this horrible crisis. The consumer of the products are facing increase price of commodities. It made people’s life difficult and hard to pay too much on their daily food and drinks. During the economic crisis in 2008, coffee customers were still had 3. 3 cups per day on average and they may choose the lower cost coffee. The political and legal pressure is also filled with the coffee industry. Coffee companies buy coffee beans from different countries under their own regulations and customs. The company has to know the professional knowledge about how to import coffee beans from other country and follow the change of political policy. At the same time, firms must prepare well of necessary forms and permits to do coffee business. It includes business entity applications, tax forms, contracts and store leases and so on. The company also need abide by the laws and regulations issued by the local and federal governments, such as food handling regulation and labor laws. The socia l-culture segment based on the reflection of consumers and how the company response to it.As growing number of health-conscious customers, the company should keep up with the changing situation and meet demand of new market needs. Although companies like Starbucks initially resisted using anything other than whole-milk in coffee beverage preparation. Under the pressure, the product producer need come up with new products with both nutritious and tasty to satisfy the customer’s needs. Nowadays, the technological is getting more important to help extend business almost in any industries. It is also a major factor in the coffee industry. The technology is related to the product innovation, services and the consumer’s interaction. According to Starbucks, as a world’s famous coffee producer, no matter the operation or customer service, what only you could see is technological equipment. The article in â€Å"AdAge† on February 2010, Starbucks was able to use soc ial media to its commercial or customers’ feedback. Technological software is being launched in 2011 that is App Starbucks. It is could help customers make purchase, track reward numbers and check balance by mobile with internet. It is convenient for both cashers in front desk and customers who need a cup of Starbucks. Digital network is also an advantage positioned by Starbucks; Starbucks could service as a moving office even a meeting place thanks to ultimate Wi-Fi connection in its store. For brewing, Starbucks still equipped by advanced coffee brew machines. Such as clover, it precise control time, temperature, material volume in order to qualified coffee (Chorn, 2013). As environment deteriorated day by day, environmental conscious and protection is being paid more attention. It is committed to a role of environmental leadership in all facets business (Starbucks Coffee Company, 2013). Starbucks is considering replacing plastic package by some special biodegradable material ; what is more, Starbucks try it best to do recycling even if some location is hard to come true that. According to industry environment, coffee service has evolved into very specialized profession, the coffee retailer do not believe themselves as merely coffee seller any more. With a profusion of advanced delivery system and a wide variety of products, they willing to create an awesome culture those customers have even experienced.Truthfully, there is no direct offense to Starbucks by other coffee firms; however, more recently an intense competition between those major coffee brands, there will be more pressure on Starbucks. For instance, McDonald's has 14,000 stores in the U. S. and caters to a wider demographic than Starbucks; it also enjoys increased traffic from its variety of well-established breakfast options. McDonald's coffee sales increased 15% in 2006 (Hub Pages, 2012). From the side of customers, customers are powerful force in coffee industry. The largest segment of rev enue is coming from individual buyers. They can influence the price, quantity and quality of the product. That is to say the rate of profit of a coffee company directly affected by customers. Starbucks’s most supplements come from its loyal customers, Starbucks brand has been deep widespread among crowded. But as no apparent lower unemployment rate exists and lots of people fired from their work position, they have to tight daily expenditure even if they are crazy about Starbucks. The price strategy should be mentioned by Starbucks under tough market environment. Replan a flexible and reasonable selling price based on customer behaviors.Firm/Industry Location Starbucks is the largest  coffeehouse  company in the world, with 20,366 stores in 61 countries, including 13,123 in the United States, 1,299 in Canada, 977 in Japan, 793 in the United Kingdom, 732 in China, 473 in South Korea, 363 in Mexico, 282 in Taiwan, 204 in the Philippines, 164 in Thailand and 3 in India (Wikip edia, 2013). Starbucks’ located combined by daily and evening locations. Almost every location builds at corner of traffic lots. Besides, some of Starbucks located in college campus, because college students are its target market either.Taking a conclusion, Starbucks’ location always depend on how service customers efficiently in order to profits getting back. Business and Pricing Strategies Starbucks planned its pricing strategies divided to two columns. One is that it headed downwards most popular production such as, brewed coffee and lattes coffee. It is also redesigned its menu to feature out low priced brewed coffee or lattes. Another one is increasing the prices of its higher-end more complex drinks including Frappuccinos and caramel macchiatos, of which there is less competition from rivals. In some cases, prices are rising by 30 cents (Pricing for profit, 2009). As a result, some speculate that Starbucks is trying to make the most profit from its devoted custome rs who are hooked on its products. Different price strategy on different marketing production is in order to make good profits. Entrepreneurial Ability of Managers Entrepreneurial Ability of Managers it is an important function of management which helps to maximize efficiency and to achieve organizational goals. The mark of an effective leader is his ability to foresee the business trends and stay ahead of his rivals. Howard Schultz who is the owner of Starbucks. In a sense, Howard Schultz did what similar to Steve Jobs and other innovators have done, creating something that we really did not know we needed until we had it. He spends lots of his time in working place and focuses more on company innovation and effective management. Recently, Starbucks launched its new production that is named Verismo (Business Insider, 2013). Schultz stated that its plan is to use Verismo to be a global leader. As well-know, Starbucks cover more employees’ benefit than other coffee related comp any. No matter part-time workforce or full-time there, Starbucks provide unbelievable benefit that you never seen. That is exactly what Schultz’s belief that employee satisfaction lead to customers’ satisfaction. What is more, Starbucks encourage employee to participate to social activities, it is good way of brand reorganization. An efficient management will release a help to sales increase and profits maximizing. Starbucks always realign its top management based on specific situation. Unlike other company grouping their firm entirely wherever domestic market or international market, Starbucks divided their responsibilities for its business into three global regions, Asia, America and rest of world’s place.Every region has its own executive, which take a hold of the entire region. Which is possible of this change would help maximize its opportunities in growing market like China, Brazil and India. Conclusion Starbucks is the leader of the coffee industry devote to produces high quality and premium roasted coffee to market in many areas of the world. The success is hard to ignore the contribution from Howard Schultz. With his entrepreneurial ability and effective management, Starbucks is keeping moving forward to grow up and face changing situation and variety of problems caused by both internal and external impact. The management structure of Starbucks became a benchmark in coffee industry which many industry players are willing to emulate and study. Starbucks is powered by their continual bringing new innovative product, build good relationship with customers, ability to expand globally and right decision of select locations. Coffee and tea are popularly in all over the world and attract large number of population. Coffee industry is sensitive that can provide attractive revenues to the company. However, the company only could be success and get huge profit under the competition if the efficient and effective strategies are being taken. The key successful factors of coffee industry demand is utilize technology to enhance customer experience, innovate products, select appropriate location and prepare well to conquer competitors. The Sociological Perspective

Know the assumptions of structural-functional, conflict, and symbolic interaction theories. Review the contributions of Augusta Comet, Herbert Spencer, Karl Marx, 6. Mile Drummers, Max Weber, Harriet Martinets, Jane Addams, and W. E. B. Dubos. Review the development of sociology in the United States. 8. Review the process of the three types of research discussed in the textbook. 9. Outline the steps in the scientific method of research. 10. Differentiate between the following concepts: variable, independent and dependent variables, and control variables. 11. 12. 13.Explain the importance of operational De Discuss what a sample is in survey research. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of controlled experiments, survey research, and participant observation. Do you every wonder why people in the Midwest drive pick-ups and the people in China want a bicycle? Do you ever think about why people were glued to their televisions when the World Trade Center Towers were destroyed by terro rists? Do you ever watch people at a ballgame or at a shopping mall? Have you ever wondered why these people behave as they do? Do you ask yourself why you make some of the decisions that you do?If you see influences from family, friends, co-workers, and the kind of economy hat we live in, then you are practicing sociology. Sociology is concerned with the groups, large and small, that we are a part of and how they influence our behavior. Sociology is one part of the social sciences. The social sciences are a related group of disciplines that study some aspect of human behavior. The differences are in the focuses. As examples, psychology focuses on such areas as the personality, the brain, and how we learn. History and political science study past events, government structures, and current affairs to understand our behavior.Economics includes areas such as supply and emend, government policies, and occupational trends. Anthropology focuses on cultures and how they determine certain b ehaviors. Sociology can be explained by the updated version of an old story titled: The Elephant Story. It goes as follows: It is said that in the recent past five wise men and women, all blindfolded, were led to an elephant. Each was asked to explain what they â€Å"saw†. The first, a psychologist, feeling the top of the head, said, â€Å"This is the only thing that counts. All feeling and thinking takes place inside here.To understand this beast, we need study only this. The second, an anthropologist, tenderly touching the trunk and the tusks, said, â€Å"This is really primitive. I feel very comfortable here. Concentrate on these. † The third, a political scientist, feeling the gigantic ears, said, â€Å"This is the power center. What goes in here controls the entire beast. Concentrate your studies here. † The fourth, an economist, feeling the mouth, said, this is what counts. What goes in here is distributed throughout the body. Concentrate your studies on this. Then came the sociologist (OF course! , who, feeling the entire body, said, You can't understand the beast by concentrating only one part. Each is but part of the whole. The head, the trunk and tusks, the ears, the mouth – all are important. And so are the parts of the beast that you haven't even mentioned. We must remove our blindfolds so we can see the larger picture. We have to see the larger picture. We have to see how everything works together to form the entire animal. Pausing for emphasis, the sociologist added, â€Å"And we also need to understand how this creature interacts with similar creatures, HOW does their life in groups influence their behaviors? I wish I could conclude this fable by saying that the psychologist, the anthropologist, the political scientist, and the economist, dazzled upon hearing the wisdom of the sociologist, amidst gasps of wonderment threw away their blindfolds, and joining together, began to examine the larger picture. But, alas, an d alack! Upon hearing this sage advice, each stubbornly bound their blindfolds even tighter to concentrate all the more on the single part. And if you listened very, very carefully you could even hear them saying, â€Å"Don't touch the tusks. † ‘take your hand off the ears. â€Å"Stay away room the mouth – that's my area. † Sociology, however, includes all of these areas of study and is probably the broadest of all of the social sciences. The main difference is that sociology focuses on the effects of groups on our actions and decisions. Sociology views behavior as resulting from all of the various influences that these disciplines specifically study. Certainly living in an industrial/technological society affects our motivations and our occupational choices. World War II affected how we view women in the labor force today. Telecommunications have influenced our current work patterns. These are a few examples that demonstrate the effects of our society on b ehavior. Sociology is defined as the systematic study of human social interaction. This means how we interact with persons in any group setting. Most of us follow patterns in our behaviors (think about your morning routines, are they usually the same? ) and this allows sociologists to learn something about our behavior. Sociologists try to describe and to explain behavior. They are people watchers – looking for patterns of behavior which allows sociologists to predict trends in behavior to help determine better social policies. However, sociologists realize that people change which requires that our predictions be tenuous. Never the less, sociologists want to develop a body Of reliable knowledge that can be applied to make our lives more understandable. Sociologists explain behavior through the concepts of structure and roles. Structure is much like a framework or script that guides our behavior. Roles, on the other hand, fit into a structure and deal with how we should perfor m. In a basketball game, rules serve to give the game structure. Everyone who plays knows or should know the rules of the game. This allows everyone to now how to behave and what to expect.

Best Examples of Palindromes in the English Language

Best Examples of Palindromes in the English Language What do the words â€Å"madam,† â€Å"mom,† and â€Å"rotor† have in common? They are palindromes: words, phrases, verses, sentences, or a series of characters that read the same both forwards and backwards. A palindrome can be as short as three characters (mom, for instance), or as long as an entire novel. Take this multi-sentence palindrome as an example: Are we not pure? â€Å"No, sir!† Panama’s moody Noriega brags. â€Å"It is garbage!† Irony dooms a man - a prisoner up to new era. From dad to kayak, you likely encounter many palindromes in your daily life. In addition to everyday speech, this feature of language has applications from literature to classical music composition to molecular biology.   The History of Palindromes â€Å"Palindrome† derives from the Greek word palà ndromos, meaning â€Å"running back again.† However, the use of palindromes was not exclusive to the Greeks. Since at least 79 AD, palindromes appeared in Latin, Hebrew, and Sanskrit. English poet John Taylor was hailed as one of the first palindrome writers when he wrote: â€Å"Lewd did I live, evil I did dwel.† In the following centuries, palindromes increased in popularity, and by 1971, the Guinness Book of World Records began to officially recognize the worlds longest palindromes. Between 1971 and 1980, the winner grew from 242 words to 11,125 words. Today, palindromes are celebrated on Palindrome Days, when the numerical date is itself a palindrome (e.g. 11/02/2011). With palindromes, the same rules of punctuation, capitalization and spacing don’t apply. For example, the word â€Å"Hannah† is a palindrome, even though both â€Å"H’s† aren’t capitalized. And what about words that spell another word backwards, like â€Å"live† becoming â€Å"evil†? That’s called a semordnilap, which happens to be itself a semordnilap of palindrome. Record-Breaking Palindromes Youre probably familiar with some of the most famous palindromes in the English language, like Madam, Im Adam and a nut for a jar of tuna. How many of these lesser-known, record-breaking palindromes do you know? The longest palindromic English word, according to the Guinness Book of World records: detartrated. The Guinness Book of Records bestowed the honor of longest English palindrome to detartrated, which is the preterit and past participle of detartrate, meaning to remove tartrates, or organic compounds. Unlike most English palindromes, which usually have seven letters or fewer, this has 11- impressive, except that Finnish palindromes easily rival it, with two having 25 letters.   The longest palindromic English word, according to the Oxford English Dictionary: tattarrattat. Coined by James Joyce in his 1922 novel Ulysses, the word is an onomatopoeia. It has been used to describe the sound of someone knocking on a door. The most recognizable palindromic poem: â€Å"Doppelgnger† by English poet James A. Lindon. At the poem’s midway point, each line is repeated backwards. The use of the device has literary significance: the concept of a doppelgnger involves a ghostly reflection of oneself, and the palindromic structure means that the latter half of the poem serves as a reflection of the first half.   The best palindromic place name: Wassamassaw. Wassamassaw is a swamp in South Carolina   The best Finnish palindrome: saippuakuppinippukauppias. This is the Finnish word for a soap cup trader, one of the longest palindromes in the world The longest palindromic novel: Lawrence Levine’s Dr. Awkward Olson in Oslo. In 1986, Lawrence Levine published the 31,954-word Dr. Awkward Olson in Oslo. Like Stephen’s letter, the novel is primarily gibberish. The history-based palindrome: Able was I ere I saw Elba. This palindrome related to French leader Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile to the island of Elba.   The best album title: Satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas (Satan, oscillate my metallic sonatas). In 1991, American rock band Soundgarden included this bonus CD with some editions of Badmotorfinger, their third studio album.   The longest letter: David Stephen’s Satire: Veritas. Published in 1980 as a monograph, the letter is 58,706 words long. The ancient Roman palindrome: In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni. Like the Greeks, the Romans were also fans of palindromes, and this translates to â€Å"we enter the circle after dark and are consumed by fire,† which was believed to relate to how moths circled a flame. Palindromes in Math, Science, and Music Palindromic strands of DNA can be found in molecular biology, and mathematicians may look for palindromic numbers that have unique properties. Classical, experimental, and humorist composers have integrated musical palindromes into their work, including Joseph Haydn and Weird Al Yankovic.  Hadyns Symphony No. 47 in G Major was nicknamed The Palindrome since the Minuetto al Roverso and the Trio are both written so that second part of each piece is the same as the first, only backwards.

For example, if you need to improve your knowledge of, say, linear functions, you can find that topic in Khan Academy's resources, then watch videos and complete practice problems that focus specifically on that area. This is a more focused and effective method of studying specific skills than just completing an entire practice test would be, so it'll save you time and help you strengthen that skill faster. Strength 4:Official Resources As I mentioned above, since Khan Academy developed these resources with the College Board (the designer of the SAT), their resources are considered official. This means you can be certain that they give an accurate representation of what the SAT will be like and what topics it will test. Some lower-quality test companies provide prep materials that aren’t always an accurate representation of the SAT. They may ask questions on topics the real SAT doesn’t, ignore important subjects the SAT covers, or ask questions in a way the SAT never would. When you’re preparing for the SAT, the more accurate your prep materials are, the more they’ll help you, and Khan Academy offers high-quality resources.Using official prep resources can be particularly helpful if you’re just beginning to study for the SAT and don’t have a solid knowledge of the test yet. Once you’ve studied the test more, you’ll begin to be able to identify when unofficial prep resources deviate from the actual exam. What Is Khan Academy Test Prep Not as Good For? We have an entire guide that explains why you shouldn't onlyuse Khan Academy's resources for your SAT prep, but here is an overview of three of their most important shortcomings. For each weakness, an alternative resource is suggested. Weakness 1: Test Strategies As we mentioned above, Khan Academy’s resources are considered â€Å"official† because they were developed with the College Board. While this means they accurately represent the SAT, because Khan Academy is working with the College Board, they won’t provide tips and strategies forthe SAT that can help boost your score. This is probably the biggest drawback of using Khan Academy. Khan Academy explains how to answer specific questions in a very in-depth way, but they don’t include a lot of information on general trends of the test, such as which subjects the SAT has more questions on, ways the SAT can try and trick you, and patterns test makers follow when they develop questions. They also don’t give students strategies to follow when they take the test, such as when to skip questions, how to tackle Reading passages, or time-saving tricks to solving math problems.Knowing this information can really help you improve your SAT score and feel more confident about the test. ALTERNATIVE: Look for non-official prep resources to get this information. To get you started, we have a ton of information on the SAT, including guides specifically for the Math, Reading, and Writing and Language sections. Weakness 2: Variety of Lessons Khan Academy offers some high-quality video lessons, but there is very little variety in the way they cover information. Each video lesson consists of explaining an example problem. While this can be very helpful, there are no lessons just on covering general topics, such as a lesson that explains how to solve linear equations or one that explains basic grammar principles. Seeing practice problems explained step-by-step is definitely helpful, but, for many people, they’ll need more information and guidance when learning topics they don’t know much about or have trouble understanding.Khan Academy doesn’t have videos like these under test prep; you would have to look through theirother resources to try and find videos that focused on the topic you're trying to learn. Only using the test prep video lessons Khan Academy offers may mean you don’t get enough preparation for the SAT because you’re only learning how to answer specific problems, not the basic concepts behind those problems. ALTERNATIVE: It’s great to use Khan Academy’s resources, but you should supplement them with additional lessons. You could buy an SAT prep book with practice questions, or you can check out some other online resources. Weakness 3:Realistic Practice Test Experience Practicing for the SAT under realistic test conditions is important because it helps you feel more prepared for the real exam and spot potential weaknesses, like time management issues, that you wouldn't have otherwise noticed if you weren't answering practice questions under conditions similar to those of the real exam. While Khan Academy offers practice questions, quizzes, and full-length tests, using their resources will not always give you the most accurate testing experience for three reasons: Typically Only Test a Few Questions at a Time While Khan Academy does offer the eight official full-length practice tests that you can take in one sitting, most of the time you will only answer about 5-10 questions at a time. The real SAT is long, and if you only answer questions in short quizzes, you won’t know how you hold up during a 3-4 hour long exam. You may know all the content but get exhausted after 2 hours and make silly mistakes. Taking full-length practice tests lets you know how long tests affect you and also builds up your endurance. If you haven't beentaking complete practice tests, taking the entire SAT at once can be an exhausting experience. Questions Are Answered Online A smaller, but still important issue, is that, unless you choose to print out the exams Khan Academy offers, you will be taking them online, which is not how you will take the actual SAT (which is always taken with pencil and paper). Only taking practice SATs on a computer may mean you get tripped up on test day because you discoveryou’re slower at answering questions on paper and run out of time on a section. Questions Are Mostly Untimed The majority of practice questions you answer on Khan Academy are untimed, giving you as much time to work on them as you want. While this may be helpful if you’re just starting out and taking your time to put new knowledgeinto practice, timing is a huge component of the SAT, and if you get used to taking all the time you need, you could end up burned on the real exam when you run out of time midway through a section. ALTERNATIVE: Take at least a few practice tests on paper, and take the entire test at once, under real test conditions. We have a bunch of free and official practice exams you can print out and take (these are the same official practice tests found on Khan Academy and the College Board's website), as well as a guide that will explain how to make your practice tests as realistic as possible. Tipsfor Getting the Most Out of Khan Academy Now you know the strengths and weaknesses of Khan Academy’s SAT study material. Use the followingfour tipsto get the most out of their resources and raise your score more quickly and efficiently. Tip 1: Upload Your PSAT Scores or Take the Diagnostic Quizzes First While it may be tempting to start right away with video lessons or a few practice questions, the best way to start using Khan Academy is to give them a baseline of your strengths and weaknesses, either by uploading your PSAT scores or taking the diagnostic quizzes. Doing this at the beginning will allow you to see which areas you need to improve in the most in, and it will also allow you to track your skill level in each area and see how much you improve. Even if you don’t plan to follow all of Khan Academy’s suggestions, having them available can be helpful down the line if you don’t know what to study next or want to know how much progress you’ve made in a subject. Tip 2: Work Through a Few Subjects and See Which Methods and Resources Are Most Helpful Khan Academy offers several different types of prep resources, and you should try multiple methods to see which helps you learn best. For example, if you’re looking to improve your math skills, for one subject you could go straight to the practice problems, for anotheryou could watch the video tutorials first, and for a third subject you could go back and forth between videos and practice problems. See which method you learn the most from, then use that method the majority of the time as you continue studying. Tip 3: Use Practice Tests Wisely The eight full-length exams (also available on the College Board’s website), are currently the only official practice exams available for the revised SAT. While there are unofficial exams available, official exams are the best to use because they give you the most accurate representation of what the actual SAT will be like. Therefore, you’ll want to use these practice exams carefully. Don’t just take them all at once; spread them out over the course of your studying. Also, take them under official testing conditions. If you take the tests online, Khan Academy times each section of the practice exams to make themmore realistic, but they also offer you the choice to stop after each section and review your answers. We don’t recommend you do this; instead, take the test all the way through as you will for the actual SAT in order to see if your score changes after several hours of testing. Tip 4: Supplement With Other Resources As mentioned above, Khan Academy offers some high-quality resources, but there are some areas they’re not as strong in as others. Use other resources to learn about tricks of the SAT, identify patterns test makers use when developing questions, and to answer additional practice questions. To get you started, check out our guide to other online SAT prep resources. Summary The College Board’s decision to partner with Khan Academy and offer free SAT prep resources has benefits for many students. Anyone can create a Khan Academy account and make use of their video tutorials, personalized study recommendations, practice questions, quizzes, and full-length exams. Because they offer a study plan and recommendations for what you should be working on, Khan Academy’s resources are best for students who aren’t sure how to begin their SAT prep or don’t know which areas they need to focus on. The materials can also be particularly useful if you are more of a visual learner and make use of the videos that explain example problems step-by-step. Khan Academy’s SAT prep resources are not as good at providing a totally realistic testing experience or teaching students the tricks and patterns test makers use, so you will still want to supplement your study with other resources. To get the most out of Khan Academy’s resources, we recommend you upload your PSAT scores or take the diagnostic quizzes in order to learn which areas you need to study the most, make use of their multiple resources to see which study methods work best for you, and take the full-length exams underrealistic testing conditions and spread out over the period you are studying.
